“I been smoking since 1960 and I’ve been waiting my whole life for today,” said 81-year-old Phil McDonald who was in the long line at ZenLeaf, a cannabis dispensary in Elizabeth. Sales at ZenLeaf moved slowly, as shoppers savored the selection. New Jersey joins 17 other states and Washington, D.C. to have legalized recreational marijuana.

Recreational marijuana sales are officially legal starting today in New Jersey. “This is a historic step in our work to create a new cannabis industry,” Governor Phil Murphy said ahead of the launch. Eyewitness News was outside RISE on Bloomfield Ave. in Bloomfield, where people lined up ahead of the store’s opening at 6 a.m.
Recreational marijuana is officially and legally for sale in New Jersey Thursday. State regulators cleared the way for recreational sales at seven “alternative treatment centers” that had already offered medical cannabis.
