After months of deliberation, a leading Rhode Island legislator has stated that a proposal for statewide adult-use cannabis legalization is largely complete, with only one important measure still to be settled. The matter is anticipated to be settled early next year.
House Speaker Joe Shekarchi informed local news that he’s “happy to report that we’ve worked down to almost one issue that’s left, but it’s not there yet.” The question is whether a separate panel or the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation should oversee the state’s cannabis industry.
Shekarchi, who had earlier stated that he would be receptive to negotiations on the issue of who ought to oversee the industry, now suggests that “some combination thereof or some hybrid version of it” may be the end result.
