About a year after recreational cannabis became legal in Canada, the provincial government announced in October 2019 that it would remove limits on permits, creating an open market.
Provincewide, the number of stores that are either open or plan to open, has jumped to 76 from 51. There are now 39 communities with retail cannabis stores, up from the original 32.
Edmonton-based Fire & Flower, which operates more than 80 stores in Canada, boasts the most stores in Saskatchewan with nine. Tweed, another Canadian chain, sits second with eight.
The number of stores in Saskatoon has more than tripled since the fall to 22 from the original six (seven permits were issued in 2018, but only six stores opened).
In Regina, growth in cannabis stores has been slower. Today, it has 10 stores, just slightly higher than the number allowed by the original six permits.
