Cannabis for Beginners

A Beginner’s Guide with Kyle Kushman. EP 9: Transplanting

Hi There! Welcome to Grow Your Own with Kyle Kushman.

In this episode, I’ll show you how to properly transplant your young cannabis plants, as well as provide some valuable tips.

When to transplant?

Your first real transplant will take place one week to 10 days after planting.

What kind of pot should I use?

An intermediate pot gives you more chances to perfect cycling your plants wet to dry with your feeding and watering. I highly recommend this route to beginners. Transplanting from seedling straight to the final pot is recommended once you have some experience.

What is the Kyle Kushman way? And what are the advantages?

My preferred method is planting into dry medium and water after. It reduces potential waste, clean up is easier, and leftover dry soil can be returned to the bag.

How to prep the soil and properly water?

Successive waterings compact the soil naturally, so do not pack your soil. Also do not fill the pot with soil up to the rim to leave room for watering.

Any foolproof advice when moving seedlings to their final home?

For the first few waterings, saturate the media to only 50%, concentrating on a column down the center. Slowly water all around the seedling, keeping about half the distance from the rim to the plant. Also never let the media dry completely.

Any tips on feeding?

If you transplanted to a nutrified soil, you might not need additional nutes for a few weeks. The use of super soil, on the other hand, means you won’t need to supplement at all. Follow the feeding plan you chose and observe the plants for signs of nutrient deficiency.

When and how do I move my plant from an intermediate to a final pot?

Typically, it should be within two to three weeks. Make sure the root ball is relatively dry before transplant. If you are transplanting into a pot three or four times the size of your intermediate pot, follow the half-saturation pattern for the first watering.

Is there anything I should avoid after transplanting?

Avoid flipping your plant for at least a week after transplant.

In the next video, I’ll show you have to train your vegging plants to maximize your yields. See you soon!
