Detroit has an interesting proposal to curb out-of-towners from invading their recreational cannabis market. Leaders proposed that at least half of all dispensary licenses in Detroit must go to those with the “Detroit Legacy” certification. Michigan cannabis lawyer, John Mackewich, joins us to discuss this certification and update us on Michigan’s cannabis industry.

“Applicants can qualify for the ‘legacy’ certification if they’ve lived in Detroit for 15 of the last 30 years; lived in Detroit for 13 of the last 30 years and are low-income; or lived in Detroit for 10 of the last 30 years and have a past marijuana-related conviction.” – Christine Ferretti, The Detroit News
As it stands now, only four of Detroit’s 46 medical marijuana dispensaries are owned by Detroit residents.
If approved, the adult-use law is expected to start in January 2021.
