In US news and current events today, 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang wants to legalize & decriminalize weed and shrooms. The democratic candidate appeared at a town hall in Iowa on Jan 23. Yang was asked if he could be the commander in chief who would get cannabis legalized, specifically for military veterans.
In April 2019 at the National Action Network Convention, Yang mentioned his plan after talking about getting rid of private prisons. Yang’s drug reform policies extend much further than cannabis and psilocybin though. A pillar of Yang’s 2020 campaign is the decriminalization of opioids.
Studies have shown that cannabis can be effective in helping people avoid opioid addiction. States that have medical cannabis laws statistically show an 8% reduction in opioid overdoses and a 7% reduction in prescription opioids being dispensed for patients. Yang’s idea of ‘high fiving’ former drug offenders on the way out of prison might seem radical. But considering there are 450k+ people in prison for nonviolent drug offenses at the same time cannabis is being legalized across the country, Yang’s radical approach might be the necessary one.
