In Illinois, Governor J.B. Ptitzker pardons over 11,000 people who had been convicted of cannabis possession, in an effort to expand opportunities for those affected by the war on drugs, just in time for the state’s adult-use program launch. In fact, social equity will be the focus during the next round of licensing for 75 retail locations in May. On January 1st alone, more than 77,000 transactions amounted to almost 3.2 million dollars in sales, and reached almost 11 million in the first week. Locals, as well as residents of neighboring states flocked to retail stores, some the night before, with most waiting hours to be among the first to purchase legal adult-use marijuana. Even Lt. Governor Julianna Straton participated, buying edibles at one of Cresco lab’s Sunnyside shops, reiterating government support of the industry. Currently, 37 stores are approved for rec sales, but experts predict that eventually demand could call for around 500 legal marijuana companies in the state. The future is certainly looking bright for the adult-use cannabis program in Illinois, with estimates of a mature industry generating up to 2.5 billion dollars a year.
